Ben & Lucy, Haddon Place, Dunedin, via airbnb; $49/night for spacious double bedroom, wifi, shared facilities
Thursday, March 14: Sunny and windy along the road with cloud increasing towards evening, quite a hot day
Everything repacked quite nicely and I was able to deal with breakfast fairly quickly and get down the road to take the photos that I wanted and to get to the library for the internet. Katie has a place for us tomorrow night (Dunedin Skeptics in the Pub), and Ilona was chattable.
Taking the picture of the “Wong Way” I was met by Chris and his wife Rose. Anyway, the car needed to be fuelled for today’s longer trip; tried out Caltex but their petrol was 3c dearer than the place in town, so turned back down there.
Not much to report of from the road trip. About halfway through I stopped at Gore and searched around a bit for a place with a couple of sausage rolls but couldn’t find any; so it was back to the first bakery for a mince & cheese pie which, together with an apple from the supermarket, was lunched in a park in the middle of town. Gore is the NZ country music capital and has an impressive collection of guitarists handprints in cement at its music monument. I was in the park with the trout monument, and workers with leafblowers were blowing a couple of leaves off the footpath, or trying to.
Further along the way I stopped in Milton which I remembered stopping in on the way to Stewart Island in 2009 for a small plastic spade from the Mitre 10. This time an ice cream was on the agenda – On the Spot Convenience store has the best hokey-pokey so far and was only $2.5.
Arrived in Dunedin just before 5:00 and explored the streets around here for a bit waiting for Ben & Lucy to arrive. Would have liked to have found a petrol station to clean off the kamikaze squad that now litters the windscreen, but they are apparently further down the hill. And hilly it is in the part of town.
Room is very comfortable with kitchen, bath & living room shared. Students’ housing round about and a nice view of the sea. Got the net working and already had a request for a further lecture. Will see.
Dinner was a mild Chicken Tikka Masala at the India Gate on the main street for $13. Back here have to finish preparations for tomorrow and not forget the bananas.
