The Jr. Skeptic Society Announces
A New Prize for Science Fair Junior Divisions: The "Emmy" Award
$200 to the Best Experiments
Investigating Extraordinary Claims
Starting this school year, Jr. Skeptic Society (Pasadena, CA), will present two "Emmy" awards to junior division (grades 4-8) young scientists in Colorado with the best science-fair projects investigat-ing claims involving paranormal, extraordinary, or pseudoscientific topics.
Jr. Skeptic "Emmy" winners will receive a:
1.) check for $200
2.) subscription to Jr. Skeptic magazine, and
3.) the chance to publish the results of their study in Jr. Skeptic magazine, which has a nationwide circulation of over 40,000 readers.
Two junior division winners to be selected--one at the local district science fair (Northern Colorado District Engineering and Science Fair held at the University of Northern Colorado, Greeley) and another at the state science fair (the Colorado State Engineering and Science Fair held at Colorado State University, Fort Collins).
Projects eligible for the awards investigate scientifically and present evidence, for or against, any claim apparently involving matter, forces, energies, or effects allegedly unknown to science or contradicting known scientific laws (i.e., of a paranormal, pseudoscientific, or metaphysical nature). Each winner's project will best demonstrate an application of critical thinking skills as well as knowledge of scientific principles, and adhere to all science-fair rules.
Areas to study skeptically include, but are not limited to: Extra-sensory perception, applied kinesiology, psychic powers, water dowsing, astrology, perpetual motion, homeopathy and other forms of alternative medicine, channeling, kirlian photography, facilitated communication, human energy fields, cattle mutilations, crop circles and cow-tipping.
